2007 BEARCAT COACHES
2007 CHEERLEADERS

News

Beating Celina would mean ‘the world’

By Shawn Yorks Sports Editor

They have the tradition. They win championships year after year.
“They” are the Celina Bobcats, and they are Pilot Point’s chief rival. They’re coming to Massey Stadium Friday night ranked No. 3 in the state Associated Press poll and No. 1 in The Dallas Morning News 3A and under area poll. Pilot Point is No. 10 in the Morning News poll and received one vote in the AP state poll.
Pilot Point holds a 23-22-1 edge on the Bobcats, but Celina has won the last eight meetings.
On the eve of the annual Pilot Point-Celina grudge match, the Post-Signal asked three Bearcat seniors and coach Blake Feldt what it would mean to them to beat Celina. Pilot Point hasn’t beaten the Bobcats since a 24-13 win in 1998. That year, Pilot Point and Celina made the playoffs — Pilot Point in 2A Div. I and Celina in 2A Div. II. Pilot Point went on to lose in the Bi-District round and Celina won the 2A Div. II State Championship.
•Colt Walker — “To me, it would be the end of a great senior year. It would be cool to be known as the team that starts the roll of beating Celina again.”
•Karl Anderson has a more personal reason for wanting to beat the Bobcats — “I broke my leg against Celina two years ago, so that would be a form of vengeance for me. That’s all I’m looking for.”
•Wes Ford — “It would mean the world.”
Head coach Blake Feldt is facing the Bobcats for the third time, and Celina has outscored the Bearcats 93-6 in the last two meetings. The coach looks at the bigger picture when it comes to breaking the losing streak against Celina this year.
“The biggest deal in beating Celina would be taking the next step forward with our program,” Feldt said. “Obviously that would be a huge feather in our cap. We’ve been to the playoffs. Last year we went three rounds deep. To take that next step and go to that next level, to beat a team like that is about as big a step as you can take.”
Meeting No. 46 in the Pilot Point-Celina rivalry kicks off Friday night at 7:30.

Tilleys making impact for Pilot Point

By Shawn Yorks Sports Editor

The name Tilley has become synonymous with Pilot Point Bearcat football in the last couple of years. Stuart Tilley has been making a name for himself on both sides of the ball in multiple positions for head coach Blake Feldt and the Bearcats.
This year, another Tilley has joined the fray — sophomore Seth. And both have had major impacts on the field for the Bearcats.
“Gosh, Stuart is a great player for us,” Feldt said. “He’s one of those guys who can do lots of different things. He plays wide receiver, he plays some in the backfield in some of our formations.
“He could probably even play quarterback.”
He’s known to Cat fans as a wide receiver. But as a running back, he scored on a 73-yard touchdown run against Paradise. And on defense, he led the team with double-digit tackles against Lake Worth.
“He can play anywhere,” Feldt said. “And as little as he is, he could probably play nose guard.”
Then there’s Seth, a sophomore who played on the junior varsity team as a freshman a year ago. He’s the starting kicker right now, but also plays wide receiver and inside linebacker — just like his brother.
“Seth reminds me a lot of Stuart, when Stuart was a sophomore,” Feldt said. “By the time he’s a senior, I see him being just like Stuart is now.”
And both are team leaders. Stuart is one of the team captains and Feldt sees the same in store for Seth.
But what’s it like having your brother lining up with you each and every play?
“I like having him out there because I can help him out when I know he’s wrong,” Stuart said. “For the most part, it’s pretty good.”
Seth feels the same way about his older brother, but also has the added pressure of playing varsity as a sophomore.
“It makes you nervous because you don’t want to mess up because you’re a sophomore,” Seth said. “But (Stuart) motivates me a lot.”
Another advantage is that natural rivalry between brothers can give a little extra incentive to perform well.
“He started a lot younger than I was, so I know he’s already close to what I am,” Stuart said. “So I’ve got to try harder just to stay above him.”
Stuart does have one slight disadvantage, though. He’s not as tall as his younger brother — a fact that is pointed out to him on occasion.
“I’m still more built,” Stuart said. “It’s not a big deal because I’m better looking,” he joked.
“Everybody gives him grief and so do I,” Seth added.
And that rivalry doesn’t go away when the game is over — the two are always competing.
“We are always competing, trying to get the better grades, and stuff like that.,” Seth said.
The benefit to the community is seeing these guys and the rest of their Bearcat teammates perform on the field every week.
“Both of them are the kind of guys that are fun to have around the field house,” Feldt said. “They’re joys to coach.”

Cats, Chaparrals ready to open season

St. Mark's is big, St. Mark's is strong, and St. Mark's likes to throw the ball.
St. Mark's will provide the first test of the year for the Pilot Point Bearcats Friday night when the two meet up in the 2007 regular-season opener in Dallas.
High school football is back, and Pilot Point is in for a fight right from the opening kickoff.
"We've seen (St. Mark's) twice now, and they are very, very impressive," head coach Blake Feldt said. "I think that they are a lot better than they were a year ago."
The Bearcats blanked St. Mark's 12-0 at Massey Stadium in last year's season-opener. Pilot Point's defense allowed just 166 yards in that game and set up the Bearcats' two touchdowns with interceptions, and recovered a fumble to preserve a 6-0 first half lead.
This year, St. Mark's features a wide-open passing game that will challenge Pilot Point's young but tenacious defense. It's an untested defense that faces a huge challenge Friday night.
St. Mark's features a wide-open offense with a strong quarterback who is not afraid to pass.
"We've got to stop their throwing game," Feldt said. "They are going to throw the ball and it's going to be a tough chore. Their quarterback gets the ball out of his hands in a hurry, and it's going to be hard to get pressure on him."
The biggest challenge for the Bearcats offensively is Lion linebacker Nathaniel Acho, who has already committed to the University of Texas.
"He is an excellent football player," Feldt said. "He can run, he's a big, strong kid. He's going to Texas, and he's a Texas-looking-and-playing kind of kid. Obviously he's going to give us lots of problems."
Acho plays weak-side linebacker, so where he goes depends on what formation the Bearcats use.
"They blitz him a bunch, they bring him off the edge, they bring him in the middle," Feldt said. "Everybody's going to get a taste of him."
The Bearcats wrapped up pre-season last Thursday evening with a scrimmage at Argyle Liberty Christian. The teams went 20 plays on offense and 20 plays on defense before playing a live half at game speed.
In the scrimmage portion, the first team offense put the ball in the end zone when Ethan Stuckly found Stuart Tilley from four yards out. Tilley made a nice grab over a Liberty Christian defender to make the catch. The defense held off the Warriors on their drive when Cooper Guthrie intercepted a pass. The second team offense then went down and scored, with Justin Chambers finding Jarman Johnson across the middle from 37 yards out.
The Cats out-scored Liberty Christian 21-14 during the live half portion of the night. Nathaniel Reigel and Cooper Guthrie scored on touchdown passes and Jarman Johnson scored on a six-yard touchdown run for Pilot Point during the half.
"The only thing I was disappointed in during the half was we scored, but then didn't play as well defensively," Feldt said. "(Liberty Christian) drove down and scored, and we didn't look very good in that defensive series."
But one poor defensive series in the course of a full night of action isn't too shabby.
"If you take that away, I was pleased with the scrimmage," Feldt said. "We were concentrating on throwing the football during the controlled scrimmage, but during the live half, we were playing, we were doing whatever we needed to do to move the ball."
Cooper Guthrie played well at free safety for Pilot Point, recording the one interception, while Feldt also noted Johnson, Reigel, Sam Duesman and Stuart Tilley.
"I think we're a little ahead of where we were (last year)," Feldt said. "We'll find out Friday night."

One week and counting for Bearcats

By Shawn Yorks Sports Editor
Defense wins games, and for the Pilot Point Bearcats, defense is the most inexperienced group on the field this year. But defense was what showed the most improvement during Saturday’s scrimmage at Gunter High School.
"I was pleased with how we played on both sides of the ball," said head coach Blake Feldt. "We are farther along than last year, I don’t think there’s any doubt about that."
The Bearcats scored three touchdowns to Gunter’s one on Saturday, but that wasn’t the point of the day in Feldt’s eyes.
"The biggest thing really was to get a good workout, that’s what is what it’s all about," he said. "I was very pleased. We got a lot out of it and I think Gunter got a lot out of it."]

Cats set for first scrimmage

By Shawn Yorks Sports Editor
The weather has been sunny, hot and muggy for the past two weeks – and the Pilot Point Bearcats are feeling every bit of that summer heat.
But all the hard work of two-a-days is about to start paying off as the Bearcats will get a chance to play someone else for a change beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The first scrimmage of the 2007 season is set for Gunter. And it couldn’t come soon enough for Pilot Point head coach Blake Feldt.
"I’m looking forward to seeing us scrimmage," Feldt said. "I think we’ve done some good work so far. I think we really had a good first week, there’s no doubt about that."
The Gunter scrimmage Saturday will be based on number of plays, with each team getting a set amount of plays. The freshmen will play first, followed by the JV then varsity.

Cats start youth movement

By Shawn Yorks Sports Editor
"Round One Twins Blue California!"
"Blue One Roger L.A.!"
To the bystander listening in on the first day of football practice at Pilot Point High School Monday morning, those phrases had no meaning. But as third-year Pilot Point head coach Blake Feldt barked them out, the Bearcat players knew exactly where they were supposed to line up and what play they were supposed to run.
And with that, the 2007 high school football season got under way on a warm, muggy morning. Eighty-seven players donned the black and orange Monday morning in preparation for the upcoming season.
"I thought we had a great first morning," Feldt said after Monday’s practice. "I was pleased with the way the kids worked, and I thought we got a lot accomplished."
The Bearcats begin practicing in pads Friday and will hold an intrasquad scrimmage next Wednesday at Massey Stadium. Pilot Point scrimmages Aug. 18 at Gunter and Aug. 23 at Argyle Liberty Christian.
The regular season gets underway on Aug. 31 at Dallas St. Mark’s. But Pilot Point faithfuls will have to wait until Sept. 21 to see their team at Massey Stadium, when Paradise comes to town.
The theme for the Bearcats this season is youth. Pilot Point returns 11 starting players from last season and looks to rely on just as many making their varsity debuts.

Starting date nears for Cats

Starting date nears for Cats

In 12 days, the Pilot Point Bearcats will return to the football field to start work toward the Aug. 31 season opener and the 2007 season.
The Bearcats, who are coming off an 8-5 season, will open two-a-days Aug. 6 at 6:45 a.m.
The season will be coach Blake Feldt's third season on the Pilot Point sidelines. He's anxious to see his team hit the field.
"We're excited about getting started," Feldt said. "We think we can have a good football team. But we have a lot of work to do by Aug. 31."
The Bearcats finished third in District 9-3A last year behind district champion and state runner-up Celina and Prosper.
Pilot Point begins this year looking to rely on several players that will be making their varsity debuts. Feldt expects as many as 11 sophomores to contribute on varsity this season.
"We need some sophomores to grow up in a hurry," Feldt said. "We're going to have to rely on some players with zero varsity experience. It's tough going from the freshman or JV team to being a starter on varsity. That's our biggest question mark; how quickly can our young players become good players."
