Cats keep hope alive

The Pilot Point Bearcats set up a District 9-3A showdown this week with a 20-3 win over Princeton last week in Princeton.
In what can only be described as a bizarre first half, the teams went into the locker room scoreless. The Panther game plan is simple: run the single wing and keep the ball away from their opponent.
And it worked, to an extent, in the first half.
"I didn't expect it to be scoreless (at halftime)," said Pilot Point head coach Blake Feldt.
"But that's kind of how their games have progressed. Their games have been like that all year. One of the deals about that offense is they control the football and they did a good job doing what they do.
"We didn't play well in the first half, offensively. We had too many mistakes."
Neither team did much of anything offensively in the first couple of possessions.
The Cats (6-3 overall, 4-2 in District 9-3A), finally started getting the ball moving late in the first and early in the second quarter. Pilot Point drove from its own 20 to the Princeton 29 yard line, primarily on the backs of Cooper Guthrie and Jarman Johnson, and a couple of nice passes by Ethan Stuckly. A 13-yard pass to Stuart Tilley was followed up by a 15-yard Johnson run.
A 22-yard pass completion to Justin Brown was negated by a fumble on the play that was recovered by Princeton.
Princeton (1-8, 1-5) drove from its 29 to the Bearcat 40 when Sam Suesman returned the turnover favor, recovering a Panther flub on the 41.
Then things got bizarre on Pilot Point's next series.
Johnson erupted for a long run, but during the pileup after the play, a yellow flag went flying and, after a brief discussion, Guthrie was ejected from the game.
"There was a guy on his ankle and the referee said (Guthrie) turned around and popped (a Princeton player)," Feldt said. "I didn't see it and you can't see it on tape."
With Pilot Point's leading rusher out of the game, Princeton seemed to get a little bit of a spark as Colton Clay returned a Bearcat punt from the 26 to the Pilot Point 25, but an illegal block penalty put the ball on the Panther 42.
On second down from the 41, Cody Strickland broke free to the Pilot Point 15. Two plays later, Strickland passed to the end zone, but the ball was tipped at the goal line and intercepted by Ethan Stuckly in the end zone.
The Cats responded by driving the ball right down Main Street Princeton. A 22-yard Johnson run was followed by a 21-yard Stuart Tilley scamper.
But after Johnson ran to the Princeton 31, two penalties backed the Cats up to their own 46, and Pilot Point was forced to punt.
Pilot Point had one more shot at the end zone before halftime. From the Princeton 41, Stuckly passed to Brandon Paige to the 25, and later to Tilley to the 7. A short Stuckly gain was followed by a sack to the 10 and an incomplete pass. Paige attempted a 27-yard field goal but it was no good.
A Princeton mistake gave the Cats all they'd need early in the third quarter.
A bad snap on a punt sailed over the punter's head and was recovered by Nathanael Reigel at the Princeton 2. Johnson scooted in on the next play and the Cats led 7-0 after Paige's PAT.
The Cats scored on their next possession, this time it was a quick 2-play drive that covered 66 yards.
A 13-yard Johnson run was followed by a 53-yard touchdown scamper by Stuart Tilley, and the Cats led 13-0 mid-way through the third.
The game was uneventful until the 6:29 mark of the fourth, when Duesman recovered a Princeton fumble at the Panther 23. Four plays later, Johnson ran it in from 20 yards out and the Cats led 20-0.
Princeton finally got on the board with 1:24 left in the game when Alex Solarzano booted a 42-yard field goal.
"Defensively, I can't be any more proud," Feldt said.
"We played hard. Hats off to our defense."
