Celina hammers Pilot Point
Celina (6-0, 3-0) jumped out to a big lead early behind the legs of running backs Charley Waldrep and Troy McCartney, and the Bobcats romped to a 56-6 win on Friday at Massey Stadium.
The win was Celina’s ninth straight over its neighboring rival.
“I was very disappointed in the way our kids responded,” said Pilot Point head coach Blake Feldt. “We didn’t have any fight in us tonight. It didn’t have anything to do with the score or anything like that. I was disappointed in the way that we fought and the way that we played.”
Celina kept Pilot Point’s (4-2, 2-1) defense on the field with its persistent running game. The Bobcats tallied 438 yards on the ground and scored seven rushing touchdowns. Waldrep totaled 137 rushing yards and a score while McCartney had 98 and a touchdown. Celina scored on eight of its 11 drives.
“They whipped us,” Feldt said. “They whipped us up front. We couldn’t stop them because they whipped us – plain and simple. We didn’t respond to anything they did. They came out and hit us in the mouth and we were just taking it.”
Pilot Point was no match for Celina’s swarming defense either. Bobcat defensive tackle Troy Franklin and free safety D’Anton Lynn controlled the game in their respective manners. Celina held Pilot Point to just 41 yards in the first half, 38 of which came on a pass play from Bearcat quarterback Ethan Stuckly to running back Cooper Guthrie.
Pilot Point managed only 145 total yards despite Jarman Johnson’s performance in the second half. Johnson had 95 yards rushing and scored the Bearcats’ only touchdown -- a 48-yard run that came after the game was well out of reach.
Celina quickly took a 22-0 lead by halftime as it tallied 203 rushing yards by the break. The Bobcats ate up most of the first half on two scoring a drives -- a 4:21 march that ended with a 6-yard touchdown run by Jose Romero in the first quarter and a 6:16 drive in the second quarter that Waldrep ended with a 17-yard run.
Celina didn’t take long to take the lead over Pilot Point. The Bobcats needed only four plays to take the game’s opening drive to the end zone. Sparked by a 41-yard run by McCartney on the first play from scrimmage, Celina went 56 yards, and McCartney capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.
It was more of the same in the second half. Pilot Point went three-and-out on its first drive and quarterback Ethan Stuckly fumbled on the second. Celina’s first two drives went for quick touchdowns -- first a two-play drive capped by a 14-yard Seth Davis pass to Andy James and then a three-play drive that Romero ended with a 23-yard score.
“I was really disappointed with the way we came out in the second half,” Feldt said. “We didn’t do much of anything.”
