Bearcats end season with tough loss

The Pilot Point Bearcats went toe-to-toe with the Frisco Wakeland Wolverines last Friday night, but in the end, Wakeland’s wide-open passing game won out over Pilot Point’s run attack as the Wolverines downed the Bearcats 31-20 at Massey Stadium. The win solidifies Wakeland in second place in District 9-3A and knocks Pilot Point from playoff contention.

Pilot Point, Prosper and Whitesboro all finished 4-3 in the district standings, but Prosper gets the nod by virtue of its 25-6 win over the Bearcats on Oct. 19, based on margin of victory.

Pilot Point’s seven-point win over Whitesboro was not enough to make up the point margin for the Cats.

Wakeland’s run-and-gun offense moved quickly northbound down the field on its opening possession. The Wolverines (9-1 overall, 6-1 district) needed five plays to score, with lefthanded quarterback Will Secord passing 45 yards to Darius Davis for the score. Brennan Satre added the extra point and Wakeland was in business, 7-0.

But the Cats (6-4, 4-3) returned the favor on their first possession, using the running game to contrast with Wakeland’s pass-happy attack. Pilot Point drove 78 yards in seven plays, with Jarman Johnson taking a direct snap and scoring from the 15. Johnson went left, then cut right and scored easily. The extra point was no good and the Cats trailed 7-6.

A 2 4 - y a r d r u n by Johnson led to a 12-yard Stuart Tilley run, an 8-yard gain by Cooper Guthrie, a 7-yard jaunt by Tilley and two Guthrie runs totaling 12 yards to set up the score.

Wakeland answered with a 44-yard drive that took three minutes off the clock and used seven plays. Secord threw for the end zone from the 18, but the pass was broken up by Johnson, and Wakeland settled for a 35-yard Brennan Satre field goal for a 10-6 lead.

The Cats ended the first quarter and began the second with a lengthy 73-yard scoring march. A 19-yard Ethan Stuckly to Nathanael Reigel touchdown pass culminated the 12-play drive. The extra point was again no good, but the Cats led 12-10 with 9:22 left in the second quarter.

The lead lasted less than three minutes.

From its own 20, Wakeland scored in six penalty plagued plays, with Phillip Floyd doing the honors from five yards out.

The drive was helped along by a Secord to Jamie Harris pass play that took the ball from the Wakeland 23 to the Bearcat 18. Wakeland ended the half with a 59-yard Secord to Antonio Dennard pass for a touchdown.

Secord passed to Floyd for the conversion and Wakeland led 25-12 at halftime.

The Bearcat defense pretty much held the Wolverines in the second half. Their only score came early in the third quarter after the Cats gift-wrapped the ball with a fumble on the first play of the half.

Wakeland took over on the Pilot Point 28 and scored in three plays, with Secord finding Davis again from 17 yards out.

The would be it for the Wolverines.

The Cats put together an impressive drive on the ensuing possession, but it ended in misery for Pilot Point. It started with a 15-yard penalty on Wakeland. A short pass to Tilley, a 14- yard Karl Anderson run and a short Guthrie run put the ball at midfield.

Wakeland was called for another 15-yard penalty, and Guthrie rumbled 10yards to the 25 before a Bearcat penalty backed them up to the 35. Stuckly scrambled out of the pocket for a short gain, but the Wolverines were called for a facemask, putting the ball on the 19. Four Guthrie runs put the ball on the Wakeland 5 before Stuckly went to the air to reach the end zone.

Only problem was, Wakeland’s Lee Harris caught the ball at the 1, and the Wolverines took
over from there.
