Guthrie rushes for 236

After losing their season opener, the Pilot Point Bearcats have bounced back to win three in a row. And last Friday's was the most important so far.
It was a District 9-3A time, and the Bearcats made the Bonham Purple Warriors feel a little blue after winning, 35-0, in the opener at Massey Stadium. It was the first shutout of the year for the Cats.
Pilot Point was led by junior running back Cooper Guthrie, who gained 224 yards on 23 carries. Defensively, the Cats held Bonham to 175 yards total offense.
The game started a little slow for the Bearcats, but after the teams traded punts, Pilot Point got going on its second series. Starting near midfield, the Cats went 53 yards in five plays.
The touchdown came when quarterback Ethan Stuckly kept the ball up the middle and broke loose for a 28-yard score.
Seth Tilley added the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 34 seconds left in the opening quarter.
After Bonham's next series was halted, the Bearcats scored quickly on a short series with two big plays. From their own 27-yard line, Guthrie took off on a 49-yard run for the Cats, and Jarman Johnson brought it home with a 24-yard scamper.
Tilley's kick made it a 14-0 lead with 7:28 left in the first half.
Pilot Point's defense made the Warriors go three and out on the next series, but the Cats suffered an interception to end the drive. And after the Cat defense held on fourth down, the Bearcats put their two-minute offense to work with under a minute to play.
With 49 seconds left, Stuckly lost 2 yards before throwing a 20-yard pass to Brandon Paige. An incomplete pass gave the Cats one last shot with five seconds to go.
That's when Stuckly found Stuart Tilley in the corner of the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown strike as time had expired. Brother Seth Tilley added the PAT for a 21-0 halftime lead.
Stuart Tilley returned the second-half kickoff to the Pilot Point 47, setting up the Bearcats for an eight-play, 53-yard scoring drive. Stuckly went the final 10 yards, and Seth Tilley's kick gave Pilot Point a 28-0 advantage with 8:39 left in the third quarter.
Bonham looked like it was on its way to a score when Colton Vest intercepted a Warrior pass deep in Pilot Point territory, returning it to the Bearcat 17-yard line and setting up the final score of the game.
From there, it was another two-play drive as Guthrie found daylight down the sideline for a 79-yard touchdown run. Tilley's kick made it a 35-0 game with 3:15 to go in the third quarter.
Neither team scored in the final quarter. Pilot Point stopped a Bonham drive when Mason Guthrie recovered a fumble at the Bearcat 38-yard line, but they weren't able to capitalize.
About the only negative spot for the Bearcats were penalties. After having only four for 27 yards two weeks ago against Paradise, Pilot Point had eight against the Warriors for 70 yards.
"That was by far the best game (for Cooper) stat-wise," said head coach Blake Feldt.
"Jarman Johnson and Cooper Guthrie are two guys who can score from anywhere on the field, which they have done this year."
The Cats have used the big play to effectively take the wind of everyone's sails.
"That's one thing we have this year that we didn't have last year," Feldt said.
"We've had lots of big plays in our last three games, and that is one thing that has helped."
