With the score tied at 3 early in the second quarter, Whitesboro fullback Bryce Chaney took a handoff up the middle and rumbled 59 yards for the touchdown.
Along with giving Whitesboro the lead, it established the game plan of attacking Pilot Point up the middle for the rest of the night for huge plays in a 37-10 victory at Bearcat Stadium Friday.
Whitesboro ripped off scoring runs of 43, 48 and 96 yards in the middle of the field after Chaney’s touchdown.
“They were really trying to get up the field to stop Collin [Kilcrease] on the outside,” said Whitesboro coach Eddie Gill. “We’re not very smart. It took us about a quarter and a half to figure out that we could bust a few up the middle. We finally got it done.”
Whitesboro (7-1, 4-0) piled up 357 yards on the ground against Pilot Point in the runaway victory that gave it sole possession of first place in District 5-2A Division I with two games left.
“We knew coming in they were great runners,” said Pilot Point defensive back Hunter Balderas. “We had some missed alignments and it cost us the game.”
Pilot Point (6-3, 4-1), who is off in week 10, suffered its first league loss. After missing a chance to clinch a share of the league crown, Pilot Point will close out the regular season at Massey Stadium against Bowie next week.
“We just need to go to work this week and get ready for Bowie, and get ready for the playoffs,” Balderas said.
The Pilot Point offense had its chances to keep the team in the game but managed only a field goal and a 3-yard touchdown pass with four seconds remaining from Travis Garrett to DaCoven Baily in four trips into the red zone.
“It’s two sides of the ball. The defense gave up big plays, and we’ve got to go down and score,” said Pilot Point coach Rob Best. “We were down there in the red zone and didn’t get it done. It’s a tough night overall.”
With Pilot Point trailing most the night, Garrett was forced to put the ball in the air 36 times, completing 24 passes for 220 yards. He was picked off twice.
Including an interception at the goal line by Clayton Stringer of a halfback pass by DaCoven Bailey, Whitesboro had three picks in the game.
“I thought the defense played extremely well,” Gill said. “We made a couple of stops deep in our own end.”
After Chaney’s touchdown run put Whitesboro up 10-3, Pilot Point moved into Whitesboro territory before the drive stalled at the 37. Garrett’s pooch punt rolled out of bounds at the Whitesboro 4-yard line.
Whitesboro needed just one play to get out of the shadow of its own goal line with Jake Dyer breaking free for a 96-yard sprint to the end zone. Dyer had 119 yards on four carries.
Kilcrease made it 22-3 at halftime, sprinting through the Pilot Point defense for 43 yards after Stringer’s interception. Kilcrease rushed for 83 yards on 14 rushes.
Whitesboro added touchdown runs of from Kyle Lynn and Cody Ford in the fourth quarter. Lynn broke free on a four-and-inches quarterback sneak for a 48-yard scoring run.
