He may only be a sophomore, but Ruben Martinez is already a veteran of winning big games.
Martinez, who had never played football until he joined the Pilot Point Bearcats late in the regular season last year as a freshman, kicked the second game-winning field goal of his budding career Saturday, with a little deja-vu added to the mix.
Martinez connected on a 26-yard field goal into the wind as time expired to give the Bearcats a 24-23 win over the Godley Wildcats in a Class 2-A Division I state quarterfinal game Saturday before a crowd of 8,200 at Rough Rider Stadium in Saginaw. The win kept pilot Point undefeated at 13-0 and put the Bearcats in the state semifinals for a second year in a row and the eighth time in school history.
