Brownsboro ends Cats' run, 28-7

The Pilot Point Bearcats knew about the Brownsboro Bears’ explosive offense and tailback Ricco Richards heading into their Class 3A Division II Region II Semifinal game Friday night.
The Bearcats quickly learned Brownsboro’s defense is pretty good too in a 28-7 loss at E.B. Hanby Stadium in Mesquite.
The loss ended Pilot Point’s season at 8-5. Brownsboro (10-3) moves on to play Celina in the Class 3A Division II Region II Final next weekend.
The Bears’ defense suffocated Pilot Point the entire night, holding the Bearcats to just 95 yards. Brownsboro also forced three turnovers, including two interceptions of Pilot Point quarterback Arthur Buckingham.
“They play the game smart,” said Pilot Point tailback Cooper Guthrie. “They have some linebackers that could hit. They hit me a couple of times. They are an excellent defense that pounds you.”
Pilot Point coach Blake Feldt said the Bearcats could not match Brownsboro’s talent and they also had too many mistakes.
“This showed me what I thought going into the game,” Feldt said. “They are the most talented team we’ve played. I don’t think they are as good as Celina, but they are as talented.
“We played poorly offensively. We made too many mistakes. We looked like we did in September. They had a ton to do with it, but we weren’t executing either.”
Pilot Point’s lone score came in the opening minute of the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Guthrie, which brought Pilot Point within a touchdown at 14-7. Guthrie finished with 40 yards on 13 carries.
Guthrie’s scoring run was set up by an Adam McBride interception.
With the margin cut to a touchdown in the final quarter, the Bearcats’ defense could not hold its ground. Brownsboro turned to its powerful offensive line and Richards to put the Bearcats away. Brownsboro went 61 yards in seven plays for a Richards 4-yard touchdown run.
It was one of three scores for Richards, who finished with 159 yards. He scored on a 45-yard run on Brownsboro’s opening possession of the game. He ended the night with a 7-yard touchdown run with 5:37 left in the game after Pilot Point’s third turnover.
“He’s a great athlete and fast,” Feldt said. “Those guys up front were huge. I thought our defense played hard, but their size took a toll on us in the fourth quarter.”
Brownsboro finished with 325 yards, including 241 on the ground.
“We knew they were fast, but we could have stopped them,” said safety Ethan Stuckly. “They were bigger and stronger than us, but we had more heart.”
Pilot Point’s defense kept the game at 7-0 at halftime, coming up with a pair of stops deep in their own territory in the second quarter. One was a goal-line stand. On third-and-goal from the 2-yard line, senior defensive tackle Joe Vine tackled Richards at the 3. After the play, Richards was called for a 15-yard personal foul. The Bears’ fourth-down pass fell harmlessly incomplete.
The Pilot Point defense also held after the Bears recovered a fumble by Guthrie at the Pilot Point 24-yard line. On a fourth-and-four, Pilot Point jarred the ball from Brownsboro receiver Logan Bryan at the 19-yard line. Stuart Tilley recovered the fumble with 2:27 left, allowing the Bearcats to hold on to the ball the remainder of the first half.
