Cats get revenge against Frogs, 35-3

DENTON – The Pilot Point Bearcats came into Saturday’s Class 3A Division II Region II Area game looking for revenge against the Lake Worth Bullfrogs for a homecoming defeat in September.
The Bearcats got their sweet taste of revenge and much more in a dominating 35-3 victory at Denton’s C.H. Collins Athletics Complex.
“We came in looking for revenge,” said Pilot Point safety Ethan Stuckly. “This makes up for homecoming. We wanted to beat them then, but we’d rather beat them in the playoffs.”
With the victory the Bearcats move on to Class 3A Region II semifinal to play Brownsboro Friday night in Mesquite. It is the first time the Bearcats have been past the area round of the playoffs since 2000.
“I can’t say how proud I am of this football team right now,” said Pilot Point coach Blake Feldt. “We’ve improved so much since the beginning of the season and the last time we played them. It’s like night and day. The credit goes to those kids.”
The Bearcats were impressive on both sides of the football. The defense forced four turnovers, including three interceptions of Lake Worth quarterback Brandon Harris by Ethan Stuckly. The Bearcats also limited Lake Worth to just 155 yards.
“My defensive line were getting a good pressure and I was just happy to be there,” Stuckly said. “[Harris] never had time to throw. He was getting hit every play.”
Lake Worth tailback DeAndre Davis was held to just 61 yards on 21 carries by the Bearcats.
With the defense in control, the Pilot Point offense was hitting on all cylinders behind sophomore tailback Cooper Guthrie and senior quarterback Arthur Buckingham. Pilot Point put up 412 total yards, including 276 on the ground. Guthrie ran for 152 yards on 16 carries. He broke free for 53 yards on his first carry of the ballgame to set up Pilot Point’s first touchdown.
“Cooper did a great job,” Feldt said. “We gave them a little different look. Cooper did a gret job of getting up the field.
Arthur Buckingham hit Adam McBride with an 8-yard touchdown pass to put the Bearcats in front 7-0. It was first of three touchdown passes for Buckingham, who finished with 136 yards, completing 10 of his 15 attempts. He added 52 yards on the ground with a pair of scoring runs in the second half.
“Our offense line did a great job blocking and we made the plays,” Buckingham said. “Our defense played a great game also.”
After the first of two interceptions of Harris by Stuckly in the first half at the 32-yard line, the Bearcats took a 14-0 lead. Stuckly caught a 13-yard pass from Buckingham for the touchdown.
Lake Worth cut into the Pilot Point lead in the second quarter at the end of a 17-play, 75-yard drive. Gage Park hit a 22-yard field goal to get the Bullfrogs on the scoreboard with 2:34 left in the first half. It was their only points of the game.
Pilot Point quickly answered behind Buckingham. The senior quarterback went 3-for-4 on a six-play drive that ended with a strike from 43 yards out to Stuart Tilley. Buckingham’s third touchdown pass of the first half gave the Bearcats a 21-3 halftime lead.
“We played well on both sides the ball,” Feldt said. “We had two other opportunities in the first quarter and could have went up 28-0. Other than that there wasn’t much that went wrong.”
