Cats rally past Rains, 14-13

Pilot Point’s defense stiffened at crucial times as the Bearcats came from behind to beat Emory Rains, 14-13, Friday night in a bi-district playoff game in Greenville.
The Bearcats (7-4) stopped scoring threats by Rains (8-3) with a fumble recovery, a fourth-down stand and an interception. Quarterback Arthur Buckingham, who passed for 129 yards and rushed for another 54, intercepted two passes in a substitute role at cornerback.
After causing a fumble on a tackle at Pilot Point’s 18 in the third quarter, Buckingham led the Bearcats on an 82-yard drive to take the lead. Buckingham completed passes to four different receivers on the drive.
“I had a couple of rough spots, and I knew I had to come back for the team,” Buckingham said. “I tried to lead them the best I could.”
A 15-yard catch by Seth Tilley set up the Bearcats’ go-ahead touchdown. After Tilley’s catch, Buckingham tried to float a throw over a Rains defender to a wide-open Justin Brown in the end zone. The defender tipped the ball, and Brown pulled it in for the score.
Ricky Loftis’ extra-point kick put Pilot Point on top with 8:57 left in the game.
“Justin Brown saved me,” Buckingham said. “It wasn’t a very good pass.”
Brown, a junior tight end, said he thought the pass was going to be intercepted. Scoring the winning touchdown “feels great,” he said.
“I couldn’t have done it without my teammates,” Brown said.
Rains, which was on top twice in the game before giving up the lead in the fourth quarter, drove the ball to Pilot Point’s 10 following Brown’s touchdown. In a bid to put the game away, the Wildcats went for a first down on fourth-and-1. Quarterback Aaron Potts came up inches short, and the ball went over on downs to the Bearcats with 4:40 left to play.
Behind the running of Cooper Guthrie, who rushed for 121 yards on the night, and Buckingham, the Bearcats ran the clock down to just over a minute before punting away. Buckingham then sealed the victory when he intercepted a pass by Potts with 59 seconds left.
Rains scored on the game’s opening possession, driving 68 yards in six plays. Derek Hurst went over from the 1-yard line and also kicked the extra point to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 7:05 left in the first quarter.
Pilot Point answered with a 70-yard scoring drive. Guthrie broke loose for 54 yards, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by Buckingham. Loftis kicked the extra point, tying the score with 6:04 left in the first.
Buckingham threw an interception on Pilot Point’s first possession of the second half, and Rains turned it into a touchdown. Potts capped a 70-yard drive with a 1-yard run for the score, but Hurst missed the extra point — which would turn out to be the difference in the game.
Rains threatened again near the end of the third period when Colby Hoover caught a 50-yard pass from Potts. Hoover fumbled away after he was hit by Buckingham on the catch. Pilot Point recovered and drove in for the winning touchdown.
The victory was Pilot Point’s first in the playoffs since 2003.
“We’ve played good for four weeks in a row,” head coach Blake Feldt said. “These kids do a great job of playing hard each and every day. This is the best bunch of kids I have ever had. We just need to keep improving, and there is no telling how far we can go.”
