The Pilot Point Bearcats needed a quick start Friday night in Whitesboro coming off last week’s heart-breaking overtime loss. Pilot Point senior Arthur Buckingham delivered.
Buckingham returned the opening kickoff 77 yards to set up one score and tossed a touchdown pass less than two minutes later to put Pilot Point up quickly 14-0. Pilot Point then cruised to a 27-7 win over the Whitesboro Bearcats at Bearcat Stadium.
“With the situation we were under, we needed a good start,” said Pilot Point coach Blake Feldt. “The worst thing that could have happened was us starting off poorly. We got the 14 points early and were feeling good.
“After last week, we were in a funk for a couple of days. We came back, played physically and got after it. I can’t tell you how proud of this team I am.”
The victory kept Pilot Point (4-4, 3-2) in the District 9-3A playoff hunt with two games left.
“This was a huge step for our football team,” Buckingham said. “We needed this. We came out and played like we should.”
Buckingham finished with 230 all-purpose yards, including 87 on two kickoff returns. He also threw for 110, completing four of his eight attempts. Buckingham added 33 on the ground.
“I can’t tell you how proud I was of Arthur,” Feldt said. “He struggled last week, but came back today and didn’t make a mistake. He played his best game of the year.”
Buckingham seized the opportunity to take control of the game on the opening kickoff. He fielded the ball at the 7-yard line and broke free in the middle of the field. He was finally brought down at the Whitesboro 20-yard line. Pilot Point scored four plays later on a 2-yard run by Cooper Guthrie.
“Before I came out, I knew we had to get started quickly,” Buckingham said. “[The return] helped out. We got them down and didn’t stop all night.”
Buckingham got the Bearcats back in the end zone less than two minutes later with a 68-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Loftis down the left on the sidelines. The Loftis score made it 14-0 with 8:22 left in the first quarter.
Pilot Point added a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game away. Wes Ford scored on a 24-yard run to cap a 12-play, 77-yard drive that drained 6:29 off the clock.
Ford ran for 55 yards on eight carries. Guthrie had 71 on 18 rushes. Overall, Pilot Point managed 278 yards, including 168 on the ground.
“We played better,” Feldt said about the offense. “We still made a couple of mistakes.”
Pilot Point’s final touchdown came on a blocked punt by Ricky Loftis. Michael Yarnall picked up the ball after Loftis’ block at the 15-yard line and ran it in for the score.
The Pilot Point defense held Whitesboro to 212 yards and came 46 seconds away from its third shutout of the season.
