After getting Prosper down to their final chance, the Pilot Point Bearcats could not make the final stop.
The Eagles converted a fourth-and-goal from the 12-yard line and ran in a two-point try in overtime to rally past the Bearcats 21-20 Friday night at Massey Stadium.
“It’s hard to lose no matter what,” said Pilot Point senior center/defensive end Monty Chambers. “I think we were the better team. We just got unlucky.”
The loss drops the Bearcats (3-4) to 2-2 in District 9-3A.
“We’ve got to win,” said Pilot Point coach Blake Feldt. “We’ve got three games left. We’ve got to win them all.”
Up 20-13, Pilot Point looked on the verge of winning in overtime after a Jesse Montelongo sack of Prosper quarterback Tyler Toney and incomplete pass brought up fourth-and-goal from the 12. Toney then rolled out then connected with running back Fuller Bates in the end zone for the touchdown.
“It was just a clutch play [Toney] and Fuller Bates both,” said Prosper coach Ken Scott.
Feldt said the Bearcats knew the ball was going to Bates.
“[Bates] just made a great play,” Feldt said. “We got bunched up in there. We knew they were going to [Bates], but didn’t get it done.”
Down by one, Scott elected to go for the win. Toney ran around the right end into the end zone to end the game and set off the celebration on the Prosper sideline.
“I coached at Sam Houston for a year,” Scott said. “One of the things they always said was when you are at home continue kicking and when you are on the road get it over. Tonight it worked out for us.”
Feldt said: “That’s the toughest loss I’ve ever had. I hate it when coaches say we deserved to win. But I thought we played as hard as we could and deserved to win.”
Prosper’s game-winning drive came after Pilot Point scored on its only overtime possession. Ethan Stuckly scored on a 1-yard run.
Stuckly played quarterback the second half, throwing for 73 yards, completing six of his nine passes.
Stuckly led the Bearcats on a 10-play, 40-yard drive in the fourth quarter for the game-tying field goal. Ricky Loftis hit a 32-yard field goal to tie the game at 13. It was Loftis’ second field goal of the game. He also hit a 31-yard field goal in the third quarter to give Pilot Point a 10-7 lead.
The Bearcats passed up a Loftis field goal try of 32 yards on the final play of the third quarter, attempting a fake field goal. Prosper turned the Bearcats away, sacking Arthur Buckingham.
Prosper followed the stop with a 7-play scoring drive to take a 13-10 lead on Drew Griffin’s second touchdown run. Griffin ran for 50 yards on 12 carries.
Bates led the Eagles in rushing with 121 yards on 23 carries.
Cooper Guthrie led the Pilot Point offense with 65 yards on 18 carries. Guthrie scored on a 15-yard run to cap the Bearcats’ opening drive of the night.
