Cats shut out Van Alstyne, 7-0

The Pilot Point Bearcats scored on their first possession Friday night and never found the end zone again.
It was all the Bearcats (3-2, 2-0) needed as their defense posted a shutout in a 7-0 victory over Van Alstyne at Massey Stadium.
The shutout was the Bearcats’ second of the season.
“I thought defense rose up when we needed it to,” said Pilot Point coach Blake Feldt. “We bent at times; but when you get down to it, we held them out of the end zone and got the 7-0 win.”
Pilot Point limited Van Alstyne to 183 total yards and forced four turnovers — two fumbles and two interceptions. The final turnover collected by the Bearcats was Adam McBride’s second interception of the game at the Pilot Point 16-yard line with 26 seconds left in the game.
“I was glad I made a play,” McBride said. “That guy had beat me all night.”
All four Van Alstyne turnovers came on Pilot Point’s end of the field, including a fumble on the Panthers’ lone trip inside the Bearcats’ 20-yard line. After driving down to Pilot Point’s 2-yard line, Van Alstyne quarterback Taylor Penn lost the ball. Jesse Montelongo recovered the fumble to end the threat.
While only managing one touchdown, the Bearcats controlled the ball most of the night. The Bearcats tallied 301 total yards, including 178 rushing.
Sophomore tailback Cooper Guthrie did the bulk of the work on the ground, rushing for a season-high 125 yards and touchdown on 27 carries.
“That’s the most I’ve got it all year,” Guthrie said. “Running like that is good old Bearcat football.”
Feldt said about Guthrie: “He was outstanding, carrying the ball 27 times for [125] yards. He kept plugging away and fighting all night.”
Guthrie scored on a 7-yard run to end the Bearcats first drive of the night. Pilot Point took only five plays to march 87 yards for the touchdown. A 63-yard pass from Arthur Buckingham to McBride on the second play of the drive set up the score.
The Bearcats drove inside Van Alstyne’s 20-yard line three other times, but came away empty. On all three occasions the drives stalled after penalties. Pilot Point had 11 penalties for 104 yards.
“Offensively when we got into the red zone, we made mistakes,” Guthrie said. “We can’t be making penalties like that.”
