Cats rally past Bonham, 25-21

Every time the pressure of the District 9-3A opener on the road looked to be too much Friday night, the Pilot Point Bearcats responded.
Pilot Point’s final response was a 24-yard touchdown run by Wes Ford with 4:15 left in the game to rally the Bearcats for a 25-21 win over the Bonham Purple Warriors at Warrior Stadium.
“This is real big,” said Ford. “This gets us feeling good about ourselves as we start district play.”
The victory for the Bearcats ended a two-game slide and more importantly gave Pilot Point a win to begin District 9-3A play.
“They were fighting their tails off all night,” said Pilot Point coach Blake Feldt. “The kids just kept fighting. I think Bonham was a great team. A win against them and on the road is huge.”
To get the wi,n the Bearcats needed a fourth-quarter comeback. With 5:28 left in the game, Bonham took a 21-18 lead on Chase Lawrence’s 4-yard run. The Bonham touchdown came after the Warriors’ defense stopped Pilot Point on fourth-and-inches at its own 34-yard line.
Trailing by three, the Bearcats kept their cool and took only four plays to respond behind backup quarterback Ethan Stuckly. Stuckly connected on a 19-yard pass to Adam McBride. Stuckly then floated a pass to Arthur Buckingham at the 24-yard line to set up Ford’s scoring run.
“Arthur saved me on that play,” Stuckly said. “He went up and made a great play.
“I was a little nervous on that drive, but when the pressure is on we are at our best.”
Stuckly was 2-for-2 for 48 yards on the drive, throwing his only two passes of the night.
Stuckly followed Buckingham, who turned in a 10-for-11 performance with 123 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
“Both of our quarterbacks did a great job,” Feldt said. “Arthur did good in the first half and Ethan did a great job in the fourth quarter. We have two quarterbacks that we think a lot of. We will play both of them. Arthur is our starter, but Ethan will play too.”
After the offense seized the lead, the Pilot Point defense stuffed Bonham. Jesse Montelongo’s sack of Bonham’s Jon Herdia with 2:24 left gave the Bearcats the ball back and sealed the win.
“We just came together as a team tonight,” Montelongo said. “There’s no way to describe this feeling.”
The Pilot Point defense’s final stand closed a solid second half. After three straight turnovers by the offense on its end of the field in the second half, the Pilot Point defense held strong and allowed only one score over the final 24 minutes.
Before the fourth-quarter rally, the Bearcats came up with a similar response to Bonham score in the waning seconds of the first half. After Bonham took a 14-12 lead with 38 seconds left in the first half, Pilot Point marched 65 yards in five plays to score. Buckingham connected with Cooper Guthrie in the end zone on a 22-yard pass with 2 seconds left in the half to give the Bearcats the 18-14 halftime edge.
“I was proud of the drive right before half,” Feldt said. “That was a big momentum swing.”
