The Pilot Point Bearcats could not overcome their miscues Friday night as they fell to the Paradise Panthers 14-6.
The loss was the Bearcats’ second straight defeat and came after a week off.
“We worked very hard trying to correct some problems we have been having during the bye week,” said Pilot Point coach Blake Feldt. “Penalties and turnovers at bad times hurt in the first two games and we still had those problems tonight.”
Pilot Point (1-2) committed seven penalties for 70 yards and had three turnovers in the game.
“We had stuff going then get a penalty or turnover,” said Feldt. “For us to become a really good football team we have to iron that out.”
Penalties immediately put the Bearcats in a hole on the Panthers’ first possession. A pair of personal fouls gave the 10th-ranked Panthers (4-0) the ball deep in Pilot Point territory before Joe Vine fell on a fumbled snap to end the threat.
Cooper Guthrie coughed up the ball three plays later to give Paradise the ball again deep in Bearcat territory.
The defense once again stepped up and stopped the Panthers on a fourth-down try to get the ball back.
After stalling at midfield, the Bearcats punted the ball away. They got it right back when Jesse Montelongo fell on a Panther fumble at the Paradise 21-yard line.
The Bearcats could not get a first down. Their best scoring chance in the first half went by the wayside when Marcos Tavera’s 32-yard field goal try slid just outside of the uprights.
The Panthers opened the scoring on their first drive of the second half when Hunter Watson broke loose for a 50-yard run to put the ball at the Bearcats’ 4-yard line. Nick Pike pushed it into the end zone on the next play. Josh Erwin’s extra point gave Paradise a 7-0 lead.
After another Pilot Point turnover, the defense and special teams stepped up to put the Bearcats on the scoreboard.
Aided by a penalty, the defense pushed the Panthers inside their own 10-yard line, then forced a punt. A bad snap forced the punter to scramble into the end zone where Monty Chambers blocked the punt and Montelongo fell on the ball for a touchdown. Tavera missed the extra point to leave the score at 7-6.
The Panthers scored late after the Bearcats were forced to go for it on a fourth down play deep in their own territory to make the final score 14-6.
The Bearcats offense struggled all night, mustering only 183 yards of total offense. Guthrie led the offense with 72 yards on the ground. Stuart Tilley added 58 yards.
“Paradise outplayed us in the first half,” Feldt said “Sure we had mistakes and turnovers, but they took it to us. I was disappointed with our intensity in the first half. In the second half we got some things going then would get a penalty or a turnover.”
