Frogs spoil Cats' homecoming

The Pilot Point Bearcats gave the Lake Worth Bullfrogs one too many opportunities to spoil homecoming Friday night.
Lake Worth quarterback Paul Gonzales dove into the end zone from 4 yards out with 23 seconds left on fourth down to set up Gage Park’s game-winning extra point in a 21-20 victory at Massey Stadium.
The fourth-down conversion for Lake Worth was its only one of the night after Pilot Point stuffed it on five previous fourth down attempts.
“We were there in the right spot, but not at the right time,” said Pilot Point safety Ethan Stuckly. “That time we had to make the a stop and couldn’t. It was not because we gave up, it was because we were tired.”
The loss dropped the Bearcats to 1-1 on the season, going into next week’s open date.
“We’ve got a good football team,” said Pilot Point coach Blake Feldt. “That’s a sure thing. I was waiting on these first two weeks to test us out. Tonight we played a good team and should have won.”
Pilot Point held a 20-14 lead before Gonzales’ score in the final seconds. Lake Worth’s go-ahead score was set up by Brandon Mize’s interception of Pilot Point quarterback Arthur Buckingham with 1:05 left in the game. Mize returned the ball to the Pilot Point 4-yard line.
Before Buckingham’s interception, the Bearcats had two penalties to push them back from the 18-yard line to inside their 4-yard line. Pilot Point finished with five penalties for 39 yards. Three of the penalties came in the final two minutes of each half, forcing Pilot Point into passing situations and keeping it from being able to melt the clock.
“We can’t make stupid mistakes,” Feldt said. “We’ve got to get those corrected.
“We had the ball at the 20-yard line and all we needed to do is get a first down. We then get the penalties to put us in a bind.”
Pilot Point led in the first half 14-0. The Bearcats scored on the opening drive of the game, going 62 yards in 12 plays. Wes Ford punched the ball in from the 4-yard line to give the Bearcats the 7-0 lead.
The Bearcats added their second score on a 66-yard pass from Buckingham to Cooper Guthrie with 9:31 left in the first half.
Lake Worth scored with 14 seconds left in the first half on a 1-yard run by DeAndre Davis. Davis finished with 101 yards on 31 carries.
Lake Worth tied the game at 14 in the third quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, Pilot Point took the lead back on a 56-yard pass from Buckingham to Michael Yarnall. Lake Worth was called for a penalty on the point-after attempt, moving the ball to the 1. Feldt elected to try for two, but the Lake Worth defense stuffed Ford at the line of scrimmage.
“I’m second guessing going for two,” Feldt said. “When you get beat 21-20, you second guess that call.”
