Bearcats shut out St. Mark's

The Pilot Point Bearcats and their defense had a nightmarish evening against the St. Mark’s Lions on opening night in 2005. Friday night was a complete reversal of fortune.
The Bearcats forced four turnovers and shut out St. Mark’s in a 12-0 victory at Massey Stadium.
“We’ve come a million miles from last year and I’m not just talking about playing football,” said Pilot Point coach Blake Feldt. “Last year was the biggest nightmare that I’ve been a part of. It was one of the poorest efforts I’ve seen. But tonight, we fought hard, played hard and beat a good football team.”
The Bearcats’ defense, which was torched for 30 points in the first half by St. Mark’s last year, came up huge all night. The Bearcats limited St. Mark’s to just 166 yards and nine first downs. St. Mark’s managed only 75 yards and three first downs in the first half. Pilot Point held St. Mark’s without a first down until 2:11 left in the first half.
“Last year in the first half it was 30-0,” said Pilot Point senior linebacker Michael Yarnall. “I’m so excited. The defense was phenomenal. We came out and just played hard-nosed football. The defensive line stepped up enormously. I’m lost for words.”
Feldt said it was the Bearcats’ best defensive performance in his two seasons. It was the Bearcats’ second shutout under Feldt. Pilot Point’s lone shutout last season came against Pottsboro.
“We’ve watched St. Mark’s all summer and throughout two-a-days and they’ve got a good football team,” Feldt said. “For us to shut them out is unbelievable. How much we’ve improved is unbelievable. We were bad defensively after the first scrimmage.”
The Pilot Point defense set up both of the Bearcats’ scores with interceptions and also forced a huge fumble at the goal line to preserve a 6-0 fourth-quarter lead. On first-and-goal from the 9, Monty Chambers stripped St. Mark’s back Humberto Martinez and Yarnall delivered a blow to separate him from the ball. Pilot Point cornerback Michael Hobbs fell on the ball at the 2 to turn back the Lions’ best scoring opportunity.
“Monty stripped it, I hit him and Hobbs recovered it,” Yarnall said. “That was really huge play in a close game.”
Feldt said about Yarnall, who was the Bearcats’ leading returning tackler: “Michael Yarnall is just a great football player. He’s out there the entire game making plays. I don’t know what we’d do without him.”
The Bearcats’ play defensively made up for a lackluster night offensively. The Bearcats managed 199 yards of offense led by sophomore tailback Cooper Guthrie’s 95 yards on 14 carries.
Pilot Point had three turnovers — two interceptions and one fumble. The Bearcats also had several costly penalties that killed drives in St. Mark’s territory. Pilot Point finished with nine penalties for 72 yards.
“We didn’t play good offensively,” Feldt said. “We made a tremendous amount of mistakes.”
The Bearcats’ two scores came on runs of five and nine yards by senior quarterback Arthur Buckingham. Buckingham’s 9-yard score with 1:24 left in the game capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive.
