From the opening kickoff Thursday night, the Pilot Point Bearcats struggled to find a way to stop the Iowa Park Hawks.
Sam Raines returned the opening kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown, setting the tone for the 27-13 Iowa Park victory over the Bearcats in the Class 3A Region I Division II bi-district tilt at Northwest ISD Stadium.
Iowa Park (5-5) will move on to play Saturday’s Little Elm-Whitney winner in the area round of the playoffs next week. Pilot Point’s first season under head coach Blake Feldt ended at 6-5.
“It was a great season; we can’t be too sad,” said Grant Guthrie, Pilot Point senior fullback/linebacker. “Starting off with a new coach, it was impressive how we came together the last couple of games to make the playoffs.”
The Hawks made it a quick exit from the playoffs for the Bearcats, using its powerful running game to eat up yardage and the clock. Iowa Park chewed up 203 yards on the ground in a game that took only two hours and eight minutes to play.
Iowa Park quarterback Dustin Riley led the Hawks’ rushing attack with 67 yards on 14 carries and a pair of touchdowns.
Iowa Park scored on all but one possession with drives of 13, 12, 11, and seven plays. The 13-play, 59-yard drive ate 6:43 off the first quarter clock and ended with Riley scoring on a 7-yard run to give Iowa Park a 14-0 lead with 3:33 left in the first quarter.
Iowa Park added two field goals in the second quarter of 29 and 30 yards by Wes Newman to take a 20-0 halftime lead. Iowa Park had 211 yards in the first half, including 138 on the ground.
“We slept through the first half against a very good football team,” Feldt said. “I’ve played against Iowa Park for a long time now and their game is tough, hard-nosed football. We knew going in what they were going to do. In the first half, we didn’t respond.”
Iowa Park also owned the game defensively in the first half, limiting Pilot Point to just three first downs and 50 yards. Pilot Point finished with 222 yards, but only 27 yards rushing.
“I thought we’d be able to run the football,” Feldt said. “The first play we ran we thought was going to be a good play for us and we lost a yard. That set the tone for [the running game].”
Pilot Point finally got on the board in the third quarter, mounting a 13-play, 93-yard drive after recovering a fumble on a blocked-punt return. Calvin Washington scored from 4 yards out, bringing Pilot Point to within 13, 20-7.
Iowa Park later pushed the lead back to 20 with Riley’s second touchdown run on another time-consuming drive.
The Bearcats added a touchdown with 1:48 left. Senior wide receiver Ricky Henderson caught a pass off a deflection on a fourth-and-34 and raced into the end zone from 62 yards out. Henderson caught five passes for 111 yards.
