Cats rally past Sanger, 20-19

The Pilot Point Bearcats’ passing game found its wings at the right time Friday night.
Led by quarterback Arthur Buckingham’s 214 yards through the air and the acrobatics of senior wide receiver Ricky Henderson, the Bearcats rallied to beat the Sanger Indians 20-19 Friday night at Massey Stadium.
The victory sealed second place in District 6-3A for the Bearcats and the top seed out of the league in the Class 3A Region I Division II playoffs. The Bearcats will play Iowa Park for bi-district Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Justin Northwest.
The win also sealed the 29th consecutive winning season for the Bearcats, who head to the playoffs at 6-4.
A 52-yard touchdown strike from Buckingham to Henderson with 6:14 left in the game, brought Pilot Point back from a 19-14 deficit and gave the Bearcats the win.
“We stepped it up tonight,” said Buckingham. “We knew we had to.
“We ran a stop-and-go route. [Henderson] ran and got it. It was all him.”
Henderson, who caught seven passes for 144 yards, said about the final touchdown catch: “I just saw the ball up there and grabbed it. We’ve worked on that a lot in practice. You practice like you play.”
The pair also teamed up on a 42-yard touchdown with 17 seconds left in the first half, giving Pilot Point a 14-7 half-time lead.
“Ricky Henderson did a great job catching the football, and Arthur Buckingham did a super job at quarterback,” said Pilot Point coach Blake Feldt. “Arthur made some beautiful throws.”
Buckingham finished 15-for-23 without an interception. The 214 yards were the second most this season for the junior quarterback, who finished the regular season with 1,204 yards and 11 touchdowns.
“I was reading the defense faster tonight,” Buckingham said. “The line also gave me a ton of time.”
Pilot Point needed the fourth quarter rally after Sanger wrestled the lead away with a pair of touchdowns within a span of 1:37 in the third quarter. Sanger quarterback Cody Wallace capped a 13-play, 71-yard drive to begin the second half with a 2-yard run. The extra-point kick was then blocked by Pilot Point's Michael Yarnell, allowing Pilot Point to maintain a 14-13 lead.
Sanger got the lead on Pilot Point’s ensuing possession. On third-and-one from the 32-yard line, Sanger knocked the ball loose from Buckingham on a sack. The ball was kicked toward the end zone and finally recovered at the 2-yard line and ran in for the score by the Indians’ Chad Kerner.
