The Pilot Point Bearcats gave the undefeated Gainesville Leopards some unneeded help Friday night.
The Bearcats committed four turnovers and had two costly lapses on special teams, helping Gainesville, which is ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press' Class 3A poll and No. 1 in the Harris Poll, to 38-6 victory at Leeper Stadium.
"You can't give a team like that turnovers and opportunities to score," said Pilot Point running back and linebacker Grant Guthrie.
Gainesville, which won its 14th straight district game, scored twice after Pilot Point turnovers. Gainesville's first touchdown came on a 20-yard interception return by Kellin Kemp. Gainesville added the two-point conversion on a pass from Jacob West to Collin Sikes to take an 8-0 lead with 1:17 left in the first quarter.
The Leopards' second score was set up by a Pilot Point special teams mistake a bad snap to punter John Grumbles that forced him to a knee at the 22-yard line. Gainesville scored three plays later on a 12-yard run by Michael Miller. The score snapped the Pilot Point defense' streak of nine quarters without allowing a touchdown.
The 12-yard touchdown run was one of three scores by Miller. Miller also ran a kickoff back 79 yards and scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. His 1-yard score came at the end of a 94-yard, 13-play drive by the Leopards. Miller finished with 218 all-purpose yards, including 139 yards rushing on 17 carries.
Miller's kickoff return for a touchdown in the second quarter came after Pilot Point scored its only touchdown of the game on a 7-yard pass from Buckingham to Ricky Henderson. Guthrie set up the touchdown with a 66-yard run. Guthrie finished with 86 yards on six carries.
Two of Pilot Point turnovers came after the Bearcats drove into Gainesville territory, including a fumble on the opening possession of the game at the Leopards' 34-yard line. Pilot Point fumbled on its first possession of the second half at the Gainesville 20.
The Bearcats were limited to 155 total yards, including only 84 yards rushing on 31 attempts. Through the air, Pilot Point managed 71 yards. Buckingham completed seven of his 17 attempts for 65 yards with two interceptions.
Pilot Point coach Blake Feldt said he liked the effort he saw from his team, despite the loss.
"I thought we played harder than we've had in past games," Feldt said. "Every week since the Celina game, we've played harder. The result doesn't show it, but this was the hardest we've played all year.
"We gave them 22 points. If you do that, you're going to have a hard time beating anyone."
Pilot Point defensive back Adam McBride picked off two passes. McBride also returned the opening kickoff 45-yards.
The Bearcats will try to rebound next week against winless Pottsboro.
"Now, we have one thing to do; win our last three ballgames," Feldt said. "We'll take it one game at a time. If we win our next three games, we'll finish second and get back to the playoffs."
