Led by a stingy defense, the Pilot Point Bearcats shut down the potent Trinity Christian-Addison Trojans offense Friday night for a 19-8 homecoming win.
The defense did not allow a score and gave up only 82 yards of total offense. The defense also had three interceptions in the game.
"Our defense played a real good game," said Pilot Point coach Blake Feldt. "I am so proud of them. Our defensive backs did a great job. Our main concern coming into the game was their passing and I think we did a good job against a really good offensive team."
The Trojans' points came on a punt return and a safety late in the game.
The Bearcats scored on their first possession of the game, driving 66 yards in seven plays. Arthur Buckingham hit Zach Koerner for a 32-yard touchdown pass to give Pilot Point a 6-0 lead.
Trinity Christian had a couple of first-half opportunities, but a penalty and a tough Bearcat defense kept them off the scoreboard.
The Trojans backup quarterback Michael Pair, who was forced into duty after starting quarterback Drew Morrill left with a shoulder injury, squeezed up the middle then sprinted 75 yards for an apparent touchdown. A holding call nullified the play. The drive stalled after that and they were forced to punt.
Midway through the second period, a short punt gave Trinity Christian the ball at the Bearcat 16-yard line. Cord McBride batted down a pass, and Calvin Washington netted a sack, force a 32-yard field goal attempt. Michael Yarnell blocked the attempt, keeping the Trojans off the scoreboard.
Pilot Point then drove 80 yards in nine plays to extend the lead. Buckingham found Ricky Henderson in the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown pass and a 12-0 lead.
Trinity Christian cut the lead in half when Justin McGee broke free on a 70 yard punt return.
On the Trojans' next possession, Pair sprinted down the left sideline for a 50-yard gain. The play gave the Trojans a first down at the Bearcat 27-yard line. Again the defense stiffened. John Grumbles and McBride combined on a sack to push the ball back to the 43 and force a punt.
The Trojans threatened again on their next drive, starting at the Pilot Point 22-yard line. Grant Guthrie registered a sack on the first play, and had a big hit on the next play to set up a third and long. An incomplete pass forced Trinity Christian to go for it on fourth down. Buckingham intercepted the fourth-down pass and returned it to the 40 yard line. A late hit moved the ball to the Trojans' 45.
Pilot Point put the game away after the pick. Facing a third down and 15 from midfield, Cooper Guthrie hit Henderson for 28 yards and a first down. Buckingham then hit Ethan Stuckly for a 16-yard touchdown, making the score 19-6.
Trinity Christian got its final two points on a safety with :55 seconds left when Buckingham slipped in the end zone.
