Going into the Friday night's season opener, the Pilot Point Bearcats knew the key to the game was slowing St. Mark's passing. It was a task much easier said than done.
Led by quick-striking quarterback Kapps Killingstad and his receiving duo of Ben Johnson and George Jordan, the St. Mark's Lions torched the Bearcats 43-20 win at Massey Stadium.
Killingstad threw for three scores in the first half, helping St. Mark's to a 30-0 second quarter lead. Killingstad finished with 325 yards and four touchdowns, completing 10 of his 16 attempts. Jordan caught three of Killingstad's touchdown tosses, finishing with 121 yards receiving. Johnson led all St. Mark's receivers catching four passes for 162 yards. All four of his receptions covered more than 30 yards and led to quick scores.
The St. Mark's trio spoiled the Pilot Point coaching debut of Blake Feldt, who watched his defense surrender a total of 415 yards in the loss.
"I was very disappointed with how we played defensively," Feldt said. "We totally failed in the that regard. Even after making adjustments in the passing game, we started letting them run the ball."
All six St. Mark's scoring drives took less than two minutes off the clock. The longest scoring drive took only 1:46.
While Killingstad, Johnson and Jordan were giving the defense fits, the Pilot Point offense could find an answer early. Pilot Point had two interceptions, fumble, safety, punt and turned the ball over on downs in its first six drives. The Bearcats made on two first downs in that span.
The offense finally found its rhythm, scoring on a 13-yards pass to Ricky Henderson from Arthur Buckingham with 1:21 left in the first half. The two also connected for a 36-yard score in the fourth quarter, trimming the final margin to 23.
Henderson finished with 110 yards on six receptions. In his debut in the new Pilot Point spread offense, Buckingham threw for a career high 223 yards and completed 18 of his 26 attempts with two interceptions.
Pilot Point finished with 355 total yards, including 132 on ground. Tailback Blake Feagins finished with 89 yards on 15 carries.
"Offensively, we made a lot of mistakes, but I was proud of how we played later in the first half and almost all of the second half," Feldt said.
Pilot Point will try to rebound next week against Tom Bean.
"I told the kids this is the type of game that we've got to put behind us and keep getting better," Feldt said. "If we dwell on it, we'll be in big trouble. We have to put it behind us."
