Breckenridge throws Cats out of playoffs 34-32

The Pilot Point Bearcats' dreams of an extended playoff run were dashed Saturday in the final seconds.
Breckenridge quarterback Jeremy Heatley connected with Stephan Cooper on an 11-yard fade pattern in the end zone with 19 seconds left. The touchdown lifted the Buckaroos to a 34-32 win over the Bearcats and a Class 3A Region I Division II bi-district title at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex in Denton.
"We've done it a few times before," Heatley said about the last-minute comeback. "We don't believe it's over until the last second is off the clock. We never give up."
The victory moves Breckenridge (8-3) on to an area round matchup with Saturday's winner of the Little Elm-Glen Rose game. The loss ends Pilot Point's season at 8-3.
Heatley's game-winning touchdown was his fourth scoring pass of the game. Heatley finished with 357 yards, completing 20 of his 35 attempts without an interception.
"Our quarterback Jeremy Heatley did a great job of making heady plays the whole game," said Breckenridge coach Blake Feldt.
"We thought we'd be able to throw the ball against them, if we had time."
Heatley was sacked four times for minus 34 yards, but for the most part had time to get the ball out to receivers on long patterns. Heatley had seven completions of more than 20 yards.
"Heatley is a good quarterback," said Pilot Point coach G.A. Moore. "But if you don't get pressure on the quarterback, anyone can throw it to open receivers. We're young in the secondary and it's hard for them to do a good job."
After Pilot Point scored with 46 seconds left on a 6-yard run by Jarail Johnson to take a 32-28 lead, a break on the ensuing kickoff against the Bearcats gave Heatley a chance to win the game. Kicker Jacob Stuckly's attempt to line the ball down the middle of the field hit a Breckenridge lineman.
"We were trying to kick it deep and it hit that lineman," Moore said.
Breckenridge and Heatley took over at their 46-yard line with 43 seconds left. Heatley needed only three passes to get the ball to the Pilot Point 11 and set up the fade route to Cooper. Heatley lobbed ball up and Cooper grabbed the ball over the head of Pilot Point defensive back Mitch Lee.
"We felt we had an opportunity to make a play with the fade," Feldt said. "That was the perfect opportunity."
Pilot Point, who had fought back from second-half deficits to win four times this season, fell behind by 14, 21-7, midway through the second quarter.
The Bearcats were able to get within two points, 28-26 early in the fourth quarter on Feagins' second touchdown run.
The Bearcats remained behind by that score when they took possession at the Breckenridge 44-yard line with 2:02 left in the game. Pilot Point converted a fourth-and-14 with an Arthur Buckingham completion to Ricky Henderson with 1:40 left. Five plays later Johnson found paydirt to give Pilot Point the short-term lead.
"I think we got in the habit of coming back to win," Moore said. "We thought we done it again. You just can't keep doing that."
Johnson finished with 149 yards on 19 carries in the final game of his career.
