Cats stop Henderson, Bowie, 34-24

By Richard Greene Assistant Editor

The Pilot Point Bearcats put the clamps on Bowie's Major Henderson and took a big step toward securing a playoff spot out of District 6-3A Friday night.
The Bearcats (7-2, 3-1) held Henderson to 44 yards on 15 carries in a 34-24 victory over Bowie (5-4, 3-1) at Massey Stadium.
Henderson entered the game with 1,230 yards and was coming off a 298-yard effort against Sanger.
"I'm proud of our defense," said Pilot Point coach G.A. Moore. "They played well. I as the coach got us in some trouble. They got 24 points, but they got most of them on me with some things I tried to do."
Along with putting the clamps on Henderson, the Bearcats picked off three passes from Bowie's David DeArman in the second half. Pilot Point's Jarail Johnson picked off a pass in the final minute to preserve the win.
Johnson, in his final home game, finished with 257 all-purpose yards. He rushed for 193 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Johnson took his third carry 97 yards for a touchdown.
"It was a good win," Johnson said. "We just wanted the game more than they did."
Pilot Point went up 14-0 in the first quarter. But three Pilot Point turnovers in the second quarter, including an interception in the final minute of the half, allowed Bowie to trim the margin to 14-10. DeArman connected with Phillip Hood on a 20-yard touchdown to close the halftime gap to four.
Bowie made it 17 unanswered points and took a 17-14 lead on its first drive of the second half. DeArman connected with Hood again for eight yards on the go-ahead score.
Pilot Point quickly answered, taking just four plays to cover 68 yards and regain the lead. Two plays after having a 61-yard touchdown pass wiped away by a penalty, Pilot Point quarterback John Grumbles hit Matt Hatten for a 61-yard touchdown that stood.
The pass gave Pilot Point the lead, which it held for good.
The win gives the Bearcats the inside track to a playoff spot, heading into the district and season finale Friday against Sanger. A Pilot Point win over Sanger would guarantee the Bearcats a playoff spot and the top Division II seed from 6-3A.
Sanger, who beat Whitesboro 48-0 Friday, must beat Pilot Point to have a shot to get in the playoffs.
A Sanger win and a Bowie loss to Gainesville would create a three-way tie for two playoff spots. The tie would be broken on the point differences in the head-to-head meetings between the three schools.
Pilot Point gave itself a 10-point edge over Bowie, if a tie-breaker is needed, with a 4-yard touchdown run by Peacock with 45 seconds left in the game.
"That was very big," Moore said. "I'm sure fans don't understand the point deal and some of things we did tonight, but we had to get the points if its needed."
The touchdown was one for two for Peacock, who finished with 20 yards on six carries.
"We had to get that last one for the points," Peacock said. "I love it, in my last home game to come out with the win and two touchdowns."
