Bearcats deck Cardinals, 44-0

By Richard Greene Assistant Editor
The Pilot Point Bearcats rebounded from their first District 6-3A loss behind dominating defensive performance Friday night.
The Bearcats (6-2, 2-1) forced four turnovers and limited the Pottsboro Cardinals to only 15 yards of total offense in a 44-0 victory at Cardinals Stadium.
"We played a little better tonight," said Pilot Point coach G.A. Moore. "[Defense] has been our focus all year. We are going to have to play good defense to win."
The Pilot Point defense showed no semblance to the unit that gave up a season-high 304 rushing yards the week before. Aggressively attacking the ball, the Bearcats never gave Pottsboro (0-8, 0-3) a chance to get its offense on track. Pilot Point limited Pottsboro's ground attack to 18 yards on 32 carries.
Pottsboro's running totals were deflated by a 34-yard loss in the second quarter, when the ball was snapped over punter Carl Don Daniel's head. Daniel was tackled in the end zone for a safety, giving the Bearcats a 24-0 lead.
The Pilot Point defense also forced three fumbles in the first half on its way to building a 30-0 halftime lead.
While the Pilot Point defense was dominating the game, the Bearcats offense was running efficiently behind junior quarterback John Grumbles in his first start. Grumbles, who started for the injured Arthur Buckingham, threw for Pilot Point season-high 179 yards. Grumbles was 11-for-15 with two touchdown passes and no interceptions.
"He did all right," Moore said. "We expected that. He can throw the ball well and we knew he could. We've just been playing him on defense."
One of Grumbles' two touchdown passes came at the end of the first half after the free kick from the safety. Grumbles led the Bearcats on a four-play, 52-yard drive, completing four straight passes. Grumbles hit Adam McBride with the final three passes of the drive, including the 28-yard pass for the score with 1:08 left in the half.
McBride finished with a team-high 60 yards on four receptions.
Grumbles' other scoring pass came on a 43-yard strike to Jarail Johnson on the Bearcats' first second-half possession.
The touchdown catch was one of three touchdowns for Johnson. Johnson scored on runs of 13 and four yards in the first half. Johnson finished the game with 52 yards on just 14 carries.
Blake Feagins also found the end zone multiple times on runs of 18 and 23 yards that opened and closed the scoring for the Bearcats. Feagins finished with 40 yards on six carries.
