The Gainesville Leopards and Jerome Hewitt gained a firm grasp on the top spot in District 6-3A Friday night.
Led by 240 yards and four touchdowns from Hewitt, the Leopards beat the Pilot Point Bearcats 30-13 at Massey Stadium, moving to 2-0 in District 6-3A. Gainesville (4-3, 2-0) is now a game ahead of Sanger and Pilot Point after beating both teams to begin league play.
"Our kids knew the importance of this game," said Gainesville coach Jeff Cordell. "We knew we could take control of the district race and they were ready to go.
"We knew our district would be tough. Sanger and Pilot Point both came in with one loss. People counted us out and were not giving us credit for what we were doing. Our non-district road was tough; but we hung in there and we're now 2-0."
Gainesville rode the legs of Hewitt, who began the season as the Leopards' backup tailback. Hewitt scored three times in the first half on runs of three, 65 and 66 yards. Hewitt ran for 170 yards on 10 attempts in the first half. He capped his night with a 50-yard dash to paydirt with 6:24 left in the game, spoiling any hopes of a Pilot Point comeback.
"The holes were just there," Hewitt said. "We had our running game going. Everything was working perfect."
Pilot Point coach G.A. Moore said about Hewitt: "He played well. We knew exactly what he would do; we just couldn't stop him."
Gainesville finished with 304 yards on the ground and 351 total yards.
Gainesville was aided by three Pilot Point turnovers (two fumbles and an interception). The first Pilot Point turnover came off a punt after holding Gainesville to three and out to start the game. The bouncing punt hit a Pilot Point player and was recovered by Gainesville at the Pilot Point 46 yard-line. Gainesville scored six plays later on Hewitt's 3-yard run.
"[The turnover] seemed to set the tone," Moore said. "We had them three and out and then that happened. From then on, we made a few mistakes on defense.
"The games that Gainesville lost they had turnovers. We hoped they would have a some turnovers and we'd have a chance. We couldn't afford any mistakes."
Gainesville led 23-6 at halftime behind Hewitt. Pilot Point managed only two Jacob Stuckly field goals in the first half.
Pilot Point got the offense and tailback Jarail Johnson on track at the start of the second half. Johnson, who was held to 32 yards on 10 carries in the first half, scored on a 19-yard run with 6:06 left in the third quarter to get Pilot Point to within 10, 23-13. The Bearcats could get no closer.
Johnson finished with 120 yards on 21 carries, getting to 1,197 for the season.
Johnson had to carry the bulk of the load for the Pilot Point offense. The Bearcats lost starting fullback Grant Guthrie on their second possession of the game with an unspecified leg injury. Guthrie finished with 15 yards on three carries.
"That was tough," Moore said. "We don't have a lot of depth back there. We were planning to run Grant a lot."
