Cats shut out Whitesboro in 6-3A opener

The Pilot Point Bearcats opened the Dist. 6-3A race with a victory over Whitesboro Friday, overcoming another sluggish start before rolling to a 32-0 homecoming victory at Massey Stadium.
Pilot Point (5-1, 1-0) led 10-0 at the half, but pulled away with two quick touchdowns in the third period. Jarail Johnson scored on runs of 62 and 91 yards on the Bearcats' first two plays of the second half, giving he Bearcats a 24-0 lead. Whitesboro (1-5, 0-1) never mounted a serious challenge after that.
Johnson scored three touchdowns on the night, rushing for 247 yards on 14 carries. He cracked the 1,000-yard mark for the season and now stands at 1,077 yards in six games.
Pilot Point took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a 21-yard field goal by Jacob Stuckly. Johnson scored on a 27-yard run with 1:45 left in the second period as the Bearcats took a 10-0 lead at the half.
Johnson opened the third with a 62-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage. On the Bearcats' second series of the half, Johnson broke through the middle on the opening play and went 91 yards for a touchdown.
Pilot Point added another touchdown early in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard run by Grant Guthrie, who scored on a fourth-and-one play.
The Bearcats' final points came when the snap on the extra point following Guthrie's touchdown sailed over the holder's head. Stuckly's caught the ball and found tight end Jacob Ashcraft for a two-point conversion.
Whitesboro's only real scoring threat came midway through the fourth period, when Jason Achimon caught a pass over the middle from quarterback Taylor Harris and sprinted toward the Pilot Point end zone. Johnson caught up with Achimon at the goal line and stripped the ball from him. Pilot Point's Michael Hobbs recovered the loose ball in the end zone, and the Bearcats took over at the 20.
Harris threw for 159 yards, completing 10 of 29 passes for Whitesboro.
