Cats rally for 36-28 win over TCA

By Richard Greene Assistant Editor

The Pilot Point Bearcats worked the comeback magic for the second week in a row Friday night.

A week after coming back from 14 down, the Bearcats (4-1) rallied around a solid second-half defensive performance to come from 21 points down, and beat the Trinity Christian-Addison Trojans 36-28 at Tom Landry Stadium.

The Pilot Point defense held the potent passing attack of Trinity Christian scoreless in the second half, forcing two turnovers and sacking quarterback Preston Arnett three times.

"We came out and played defense the second half," said Pilot Point coach G.A. Moore. "We've got to play defense and the last half we played well.

"We've been moving things around a lot, trying to find out about people. Hopefully we found some things out tonight."

The defense did allow a total of 280 yards, but only 31 in the second half. Arnett, who finished with 209 yards on 13-of-31 passing, completed only three passes in the second half.

The Bearcats' needed the defensive effort in the second half due to costly first half mistakes on offense. Pilot Point committed four turnovers - a fumble and three interceptions - in the first half. One of the interceptions and the fumble were returned 82 and 19 yards for touchdowns by Trinity Christian's Drew Clark.

Pilot Point's third turnover of the first half - an interception thrown by Jarail Johnson - set up a five-play, 31-yard drive that gave Trinity Christian a 28-7 lead with 5:23 left in the first half. Johnson threw two interceptions, completing only one of his five pass attempts.

Johnson atoned for the mistakes in the passing game with his legs. Johnson rushed for 213 yards on 23 carries. Johnson and fullback Grant Guthrie paced the Pilot Point rushing attack that finished with 394 yards on 51 attempts. Guthrie had 118 yards on 18 rushes.

4:07 left in the game. After a 1-yard run by Arthur Buckingham, the Bearcats elected to go for two. Buckingham hit a wide-open Jacob Ashcraft for the two-point try and a 29-28 lead.

Johnson added an insurance touchdown with 1:47 left in the game on a 13-yard run that was set up by his interception of Arnett.

"Pilot Point has always been a second half team," Johnson said. "We came out the second half and did what we had to do. We knew we were going to come back in the second half."
