Clark leads Celina past Cats, 27-21

By Richard Greene Assistant Editor
The Celina Bobcats made it six straight wins over their former district rivals the Pilot Point Bearcats Friday night.
Celina senior quarterback John Clark accounted for four scores and 373 yards of total offense, leading the Bobcats to the 27-21 win over the Bearcats at Massey Stadium.
Clark threw for 234 yards, completing 12 of his 21 attempts with three scores. Clark's 36-yard pass to tight end Adam James with 5:52 left in the third quarter broke a 21-21 tie.
Clark also had 139 yards rushing on nine carries, including a 90-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
"Excellent." said Celina coach Butch Ford. "What else could you say about him? He did a great job."
The two teams, who were coming off big offensive performances, showed much of the same Friday. Celina rolled up 415 yards of offense. Pilot Point finished with 306, including 141 yards rushing from Jarail Johnson.
Johnson recorded more than half of his carries lined up as quarterback in a spread formation. Ford said they were not surprised to see the formation and Johnson taking snaps.
"We were expecting it," Ford said. "We didn't stop it. We did do a better job in the second half, but I'm not pleased with the defense. But obviously we played a good football team."
Johnson took his second carry and first out of the spread formation 82 yards to give Pilot Point a 7-0 lead.
Johnson finished the game with 242 all-purpose yards, including 44 passing and catching two passes for 17 yards and a touchdown. Johnson's 9-yard touchdown catch from Arthur Buckingham brought Pilot Point to within a point, 14-13, with 35 seconds left in the first half.
That was just enough time for Clark to move the Bobcats 67 yards in four plays to extend Celina's lead at halftime to 21-13. Clark hit Alan Jones on for the final 30 yards with six seconds left in the first half.
Pilot Point did tie the game with 7:08 left in the third quarter on 1-yard plunge by Grant Guthrie and two-point pass from Buckingham to Josh Chacon.
But the Bearcats could not stop Clark and the Bobcats, who scored the go-ahead touchdown three plays later.
"We had our chances; we just gave up too many big plays," said Pilot Point coach G.A. Moore.
"Any loss hurts."
