Jarail Johnson and the rest of the Pilot Point Bearcats got on track Friday night, racking up 533 yards of total offense in a 48-28 victory over the Tom Bean Tomcats.
Johnson rushed for 275 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a touchdown receiving. Johnson fumbled twice, but also intercepted three passes on defense.
Fullback Grant Guthrie also added three touchdowns on the ground.
Sophomore quarterback Arthur Buckingham netted his first touchdown pass with the 30-yard connection to Johnson. Buckingham also had 64 rushing yards.
"We planned to throw more than we did," said Pilot Point coach G.A. Moore. "We were able to find a little something in the ground game. They were crowding the line and we popped some."
Both teams were successful early.
Johnson broke free for 42 yards on the sixth play of the opening drive, to get the Bearcats within striking distance. Guthrie pushed it in from there for an early 7-0 lead.
Tom Bean came right back, mounting a 10-play drive that ended in a 9-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was blocked, allowing the Bearcats to maintain a 7-6 lead.
Two possessions later on fourth down, a roughing the kicker penalty gave the Bearcat offense a second chance. Johnson immediately took advantage of the penalty, scooting loose on a 55-yard touchdown run.
Tom Bean came back and tied the score with 5:26 left in the half on another 9-yard scoring pass and a two-point conversion.
It did not stay tied for long. Two plays later Johnson put the Bearcats ahead for good with a 57-yard scoring run.
The Bearcats added one more score before the half on a Guthrie 4-yard scoring run. Buckingham's 76-yard run put the ball inside the 10, setting up the score.
Guthrie found the end zone again from 47 yards out on the first possession of the second half. It was the first of three Pilot Point second half touchdowns.
Buckingham found Johnson breaking free in the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Johnson's final scoring run came from 49 yards out with 2:59 left in the game.
