By Richard Greene Assistant Editor Atlanta's defense brought an abrupt end Friday night to Pilot Point's deepest journey into the Class 3A playoffs. Atlanta limited the Bearcats to 136 total yards in a 19-0 victory at Greenville's Cottonford Field in a Class 3A Division II Region II area title game. Atlanta (8-4) moved on to play Jefferson in the Region II quarterfinal. Pilot Point's second season in Class 3A ended at 7-5. The Bearcats made it one step farther in the playoffs this season than last, which ended with a loss in bi-district. "We came a long way from where we were in August," said Pilot Point coach G.A. Moore. "In the end, we were a lot better than we were early. "I hate to see the seniors graduate. They worked hard. The coaches get to come back; they don't." Seventeen seniors played their last game for the Bearcats. Pilot Point couldn't get around Atlanta's speedy defense, which found an answer for everything the Bearcats tried. Atlanta limited Pilot Point to 57 yards rushing on 36 carries -1.5 yards per carry. The Bearcats never got inside Atlanta's 20-yard line. Pilot Point only had five plays of 10 yards or more. On eight plays, the Bearcats didn't reach the line of scrimmage. "They had tremendous speed on defense," said Pilot Point quarterback Josh LeBlanc. "It was just like playing Gainesville. We were trying everything we could. We just played a tough team." Atlanta coach Ben Scharnberg said: "We take a lot of pride in our defense. Our kids love to play defense and hit people. People that are good like Pilot Point are going to gain yards, but we were able to make up for a lot with our quickness and speed." Pilot Point hit some short passes early to tight ends Damas Reed and Jacob Stuckly in the first series of the game. But the Atlanta pass rush, which sacked LeBlanc three times and forced six straight incompletions, was able to take away Pilot Point's passing game. "We thought we could do it all night, but we needed to run more on it," Moore said. "They made the adjustments. They have so much speed." Pilot Point's lone offensive highlight was a 56-yard end-round pass from Jarrail Johnson to LeBlanc in the final minute of the third quarter. LeBlanc got behind the secondary and appeared off to the end zone but was chased down from behind at the Atlanta 31. The Bearcats turned the ball over on the next play when John Grumble's lateral to Josh LeBlanc was recovered by Atlanta. It was one of the two Pilot Point turnovers. "We had some junk plays to use," Moore said. "We needed some big plays to happen. But it goes back to the speed factor. They were able to recover and make the play." Atlanta scored on its first two possessions, driving 48 and 52 yards for scores. Pilot Point tried an on-side kick to start the game and Atlanta recovered it at the Bearcats' 48. Atlanta scored four plays later on a 1-yard run by Fred Washington. Washington capped Atlanta's next drive with a 35-yard touchdown scamper that put Atlanta up 13-0 with 6:05 left in the first quarter. Washington finished with 206 yards on 25 carries, leading a stable of Atlanta backs. Atlanta finished with 342 yards on the ground. "Fred is an exceptional athlete," Scharnberg said. "When he wants to turn it loose, he can. "All of our backs played well. The big key was our play up front." Atlanta's final score came on a 31-yard run by Jonathan Blaylock with 9:41 left in the fourth quarter.
