Bearcats offense breaks out, 61-7
By Richard Greene Assistant Editor
Pilot Point's offense exploded Friday night.
The Bearcats (4-4, 1-2) scored on 10 of their 13 possessions in a 61-7 win over Whitesboro (4-4, 1-2) at Massey Stadium.
The win was Pilot Point's first District 9-3A victory of the season. The Bearcats are in a four-way tie for third place in District 9-3A with two games left.
"We have two games left and we have to win them all to be in the playoffs," said Pilot Point quarterback Josh LeBlanc.
The Pilot Point offense scored early and often, reaching the end zone on its first seven possessions. The Bearcats rolled up a season-high 468 total yards. Their previous best was 461 yards against Trinity Christian-Addison.
"Offensively we played well tonight," Pilot Point coach G.A. Moore said after the game. "We've been hoping it would come along."
The Bearcats rushed for 255 yards, with nine backs touching the ball.
The total did not include a 70-yard touchdown by Jarrail Johnson on Pilot Point's first offensive play of the game. The run was brought back by an illegal block penalty. Johnson finished with 50 yards on 10 carries.
Quarterback Josh LeBlanc and the Bearcats' receivers had their best outing of the season. LeBlanc threw for a career-high 213 yards, completing 13 of his 20 attempts with three touchdowns.
"The receivers came open, and I was able to get the ball to them," LeBlanc said. "This helps a lot. This shows what we are capable of. We had the potential, but I don't think it came together until now."
LeBlanc hit six different receivers with passes. His main targets were tight end Damas Reed, who caught eight passes for 108 yards, and C.J. Hatten.
Hatten caught two of LeBlanc's touchdown throws in the second quarter. The first was from 45 yards out, putting Pilot Point in front 20-0 with 7:56 left in the second quarter. LeBlanc then hit Hatten in the final seconds of the first half for a 28-yard score, increasing Pilot Point's halftime lead to 34-7.
LeBlanc's final touchdown pass was a 21-yard strike to Reed.
"LeBlanc threw the ball well tonight," Moore said. "We always knew Damas could catch the ball. It's been a matter of getting it to him."
The Pilot Point defense also held up its end of the bargain. The Bearcats got pressure on Whitesboro quarterback Taylor Harris all night. The Bearcats sacked Harris nine times for minus-48 yards.
Whitesboro finished with minus-6 yards rushing and 124 total yards. Harris was 11-for-22 for 130 yards.
"I thought the defense played well," Moore said. "The kids were getting off quick and got to Harris early."
