Pilot Point couldn't cash in on its opportunities Friday night and suffered a fifth straight setback to Celina Friday night.
The Bearcats were unable to score on two advances inside the Celina 10 in the second half, falling 17-6 to the Bobcats. The loss dropped the Bearcats to 0-2 in District 9-3A play and put them on the brink of being eliminated from the playoff race.
"We're in the same spot as last year; we've got to win our next three to get in," said Pilot Point tight end Damas Reed. "I know we can do it. We've just got to execute."
After falling behind 17-0 in the first half, Pilot Point got back in the game behind a wide-open offense and a stingy defense in the final 24 minutes. The Bearcats tried flea-flickers, end-around passes and two onside kicks.
"We're going to have to be [wide-open]," said Pilot Point coach G.A. Moore. "We felt we had to try the things we did against a team like Celina. We'd like to control the ball like they did. I felt like we had to score three or four times to beat them."
Reed was on the receiving end of both trick plays, hauling in two receptions for 76 yards.
Celina coach Butch Ford said he wasn't surprised by Pilot Point's trickery.
"I'm really not; I thought they would play wide-open," Ford said. "Their quarterback is so talented, we weren't surprised by anything."
Celina held Pilot Point quarterback Josh LeBlanc in check throughout the first half, limiting him to 10 yards on four carries. He finished with 47 yards on 18 carries, including a 9-yard scoring run to begin the third quarter.
LeBlanc's touchdown run capped a 75-yard drive by the Bearcats to open the second half. LeBlanc also threw for 97 yards, completing four of 17 passes with an interception.
The Bearcats' defense followed the offense's lead in the second half, shutting down the Celina offense in the third quarter. Celina didn't manage a first down in the quarter and was forced to punt three times after three-and-outs.
"The defense played great the last half," Moore said. "Really, the defense played great in the first half also."
The defensive stands gave the Pilot Point offense field position and opportunities to get back in the game late in the third quarter. The end-around pass from Jarrail Johnson to Reed covered 48 yards and got Pilot Point to the Celina 20. Pilot Point reached the 10 but turned the ball over on downs.
Pilot Point got another opportunity to score when Johnson returned a punt 39 yards and the Bobcats were penalized for a personal foul, putting the ball on the Celina 6. Two plays later, LeBlanc hit Reed with a 12-yard scoring pass in the left corner of the end zone. The touchdown was wiped out by a pass interference call, however, and Pilot Point ended up turning the ball over on downs.
Celina melted the clock away late in the game behind fullback Jacob Martin, who finished with 59 yards on nine carries. Martin's 5-yard scoring run in the first half gave Celina the 17-0 halftime lead.
Celina's leading rusher was quarterback John Clark, who finished with 62 yards on 10 carries. He scored Celina's first touchdown on a 33-yard scamper.
Clark took a shot just before halftime and did not play in the second half.
