Gainesville blanks Cats, 42-0
By Richard Greene Assistant Editor
Gainesville's defense made the Pilot Point Bearcats its latest victim Friday night at Massey Stadium.
The Leopards held Pilot Point to a total of 184 yards, posting their fourth shutout of the season in a 42-0 victory over the Bearcats. It was the second straight season Gainesville began District 9-3A play with a shutout of the Bearcats.
Pilot Point (3-3, 0-1) never got inside Gainesville's 20-yard line. The Bearcats' deepest penetration of the night ended with one of their two fumbles. Pilot Point had four four-and-out series, struggling against the speedy Gainesville defense.
"We had too much speed for them," said Gainesville defensive back Darcel McBath, who helped the Leopards defense keep Pilot Point bottled up. "We're peaking now, but we haven't hit our climax yet."
Pilot Point quarterback Josh LeBlanc, who led Pilot Point with 51 yards on 13 carries, said the Bearcats had no answer for Gainesville's defensive speed. LeBlanc also had 54 yards passing, completing five of his 14 attempts.
"They're a really fast team," LeBlanc said. "We went in with the game plan to run at them, and that didn't work because of a lack of execution. We tried to run outside, but they have too much speed.
"We've already put this behind us. It's time to get ready for the next one."
Pilot Point took the opening kickoff and moved the ball against the Leopards' defense. The Bearcats drove from their 9 to the Gainesville 40 before the drive stalled. Pilot Point got back into Gainesville territory only three more times.
"At the beginning of the game, we were a little shell-shocked by the way Pilot Point was able to move the ball," said Gainesville coach Jeff Cordell, a former Aubrey assistant. "Our defensive coordinator Patrick Harvell did a great job making adjustments and shutting them down."
With the Gainesville defense controlling the game, the Leopards offense unleashed a potent aerial assault. Gainesville finished with five scores through the air and 238 yards.
Gainesville quarterback Chris Brown threw for 169 yards, completing 10 of 19 passes with four touchdowns. Brown also added 76 yards rushing on six carries with a score. Brown's 11-yard scoring run in the second quarter capped a 21-point quarter and gave Gainesville a 21-0 halftime lead.
Brown threw two touchdown passes to McBath at the start of the third quarter before giving way to backups Luke Smallwood and Travis Sutton. Smallwood capped Gainesville's scoring with a 38-yard touchdown toss to Greg Mack.
The Leopards also pounded the ball with Terrius Purvey. Purvey finished with 94 yards on 11 carries. He also caught three passes for 48 yards.
