Johnson cure for Cats
By Richard Greene Assistant Editor
The Pilot Point offense took only one play Friday night to find its antidote Jarrail Johnson.
Johnson, making his first varsity carry, rambled 71 yards for a touchdown. It was one of his three scores on his way to a record-setting 370-yard effort in the 34-26 Pilot Point victory.
Johnson, who did not play football last season, gave the Bearcats what they were missing in losses to Sanger and Bridgeport options.
In both losses, teams focused on stopping Pilot Point's most proven playmaker, quarterback Josh LeBlanc. LeBlanc still managed to make plays, running for 137 yards on 20 carries against Sanger and 85 yards on 14 carries against Bridgeport.
But against Bridgeport in the second half with the game still in the balance, the Bulls were able to load up the defense against LeBlanc, holding him to 2 yards on eight carries.
With LeBlanc slowed with a leg injury against the Trinity Christian-Addison Trojans Friday, Pilot Point and Johnson proved they have other weapons besides LeBlanc. It was something that Trinity Christian-Addison veteran coach Barry Morgan wasn't counting on.
"Based on the past film, [LeBlanc] was the guy to stop," Morgan said. "We set our gameplan around stopping the quarterback, then [Johnson] came in and busted the big plays."
Not only did Johnson's performance open the offense up, but also gave confidence to a unit that was held to just 151 yards six days earlier. In the final 24 minutes against Bridgeport, the Pilot Point offense was pushed around, being held to 33 yards. LeBlanc was sacked four times.
Throughout the game after Johnson's first carry, the unit was clicking no matter who was carrying the ball. Pilot Point managed five scoring drives four of more than 70 yards.
"This was great," said Pilot Point center Jacob MacElroy. "This gives the offense a sense of confidence. Making long drives like tonight is fun."
While Friday night was fun for the Bearcats and Johnson, the schedule takes an immediate turn into danger with games against Lake Dallas, Gainesville and Celina. The latter two, both District 9-3A games, will pit the Bearcats against defenses that have ran roughshod over everyone. The Bobcats and Leopards are both undefeated.
And don't think they didn't notice Johnson's debut and won't be getting ready. Pilot Point coach G.A. Moore already knows it won't be this easy for the Bearcats or Johnson again.
"It's a lot easier when people don't know you run something," Moore said.
