RICHARDSON -- A power outage resulted in a 44-minute delay to the start of the Class 3A Division II bi-district matchup between Commerce and Pilot Point Friday night at Eagle-Mustang Stadium.
But, it was Bart Bryant's 37-yard field goal with 3:22 to play that turned the lights out on coach G.A. Moore's record-setting season as Commerce escaped with a 17-14 victory.
Commerce, which improved to 9-2 on the season, survives to face the winner of today's Mount Vernon-New Boston contest in Mount Pleasant.
Pilot Point finishes with a 7-4 mark for Moore, who became the winningest coach in state high school history last week with career victory No. 397.
"What a sigh of relief," said Commerce coach Terry Cron, who saw his team overcome an eight-point deficit in the second half. "I am so happy we got it together in the second half and proud of our kids and coaches as we kept our heads up and pulled out a tough win."
The Commerce defense shut down Pilot Point in the second half, allowing just 89 yards and four first downs in the final two quarters.
And, the Tigers came up the biggest when it counted the most.
The game was tied with 1:36 left in the third when a 7-yard pass and attempted lateral to Trey Shaw went awry and Pilot Point recovered at the Commerce 21.
But the defense allowed just one yard and Calhoun's 37-yard field goal attempt was wide left.
That was as close as Pilot Point would get as the Bearcats managed just two first downs in the fourth quarter. Both came deep in their own territory.
The Commerce offense ground out three first downs on the game-winning drive to set up Bryant's boot. His 37-yard effort followed a 32-yard try that was good but was nullified by a delay-of-game penalty.
Hines rushed for 86 yards on 26 carries while Burrell added 81 yards on just six tries. Quarterback Bobby Phifer, who did not throw a pass in the first half, was 5-of-8 for 54 yards in the final two periods. -- Reported by Kevin Carson
